Every mom is concerned about stretch marks. Almost 8 out of 10 women develop stretch marks during pregnancy. As a Gynecologist in Aurangabad, I understand how much emotional distress it can cause. However, stretch marks are not harmful — they pose no risk to you or your baby and are not painful.
Why are they formed?Stretch marks form mainly due to:
- Rapid growth of the body that stretches the skin
- Hormonal changes that loosen the collagen fiber bonds
Stretch marks appear as narrow streak-like lines caused by tiny tears beneath the skin’s surface. Colors may vary — red, pink, purple, or brown — and they eventually turn silvery grey after delivery.
Where do they appear?Stretch marks commonly appear on:
- Tummy
- Breasts
- Upper thighs
- Hips
Yes, the risk increases with:
- Pregnancy
- Lighter skin tone
- Pubertal age
- Genetic predisposition
- Rapid weight gain or loss
- Use of corticosteroid injections
- Conditions like Marfan syndrome or Cushing syndrome
There is limited scientific evidence proving that creams or oils can prevent stretch marks. However, healthy habits can improve skin health:
- Slow and steady weight gain
- Balanced diet rich in Vitamin C, D, E, zinc, protein, minerals
- Regular exercise
- Adequate hydration — water, herbal teas, fresh fruit juices
Certain products may improve skin moisture and elasticity:
- Body butter creams containing cocoa and shea butter moisturize dry, itchy skin and help reduce inflammation.
- Stretch mark oils may include seabuckthorn, rosehip, jojoba, almond, extra virgin olive oil, and Vitamin E.
- Seabuckthorn oil is rich in Vitamins A & E and omega fatty acids that help repair skin damage.
- Rosehip oil contains Vitamin C and supports collagen formation.
- Jojoba oil resembles natural sebum and contains Vitamin B & E for nourishment.
There is no proven method to completely prevent or remove stretch marks. It is best to accept them as part of your new body — your new shape, new curves, and your beautiful journey into motherhood.
